Everything we say signifies; everything counts, that we put out into the world. It impacts on kids, it impacts on the zeitgeist of the time. - Meryl Streep

Last Night I was in a restaurant where the Golden Globe Awards were on, Meryl Streep Who I agree is a fantastic actress came on to accept the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement..

Take a look at the video, The LA Times has the entire text of the speech available

There are many that are upset, and many that are celebrating this speech. I wanted to weigh in purely to demonstrate how easily we become hypocritical in our wording.

Her is what Meryl did:

She opened engaging her audience letting them know that this year, this recent time has been hard... personally. She then started to draw them in as a unified people. Unified maybe because of their choice in careers maybe for where they live maybe due to their background. It is hard to tell since she made a pun of it. She continued to draw in her audience leading them into feeling unified in what the do, who they are, and even in there uncommon backgrounds.

She elevated their incredible privilege not in their pay, their fame or their favor but, in their job...

An actor’s only job is to enter the lives of people who are different from us and let you feel what that feels like

This is interesting because she just changed audiences a couple of sentences prior from speaking to the other actors to you, me us.

She goes on to rail against Donald Trump who I agree is a . But that really isn't the point. {FYI...having multiple clips where Donald does the same Spastic hand gestures doesn't excuse the gesture it means he developed a habit of demeaning someone that disagrees with him as being mentally handicap.}

The real point is she degraded and sought to polarize any American that didn't identify with her.

It starts earlier when she says "if we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts." Why did she isolate these two sports? She is a brilliant woman. So I give her credit for choosing her words carefully. Again she is talking to You, Me, Us. She doesn't just say sports and PBS. She isolates these sports that she feels exemplifies the people she has a disdain for. Is that Blue Collar America, Is it all the Red States. She is subtle enough to not say, only to allude to what these sports, "which are not the Arts" Represent.

Her point in hammering trump. "Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose."

I agree Meryl, But I also see that you chose the The Golden Globes Award Show. To make a political statement and to degrade an undefined audience of really whoever doesn't agree with you. It is all very subtle. Trumps offense was outright and bold. And to me it was an offense. Your speech was subtle and refined. But to me it was an offense.

You have power and influence, use it. Run for office, have a press conference, start a blog. But don't use a prime time award show to degrade me because I am the type of guy that participates and watches and . Don't belittle the people in that felt they had to choose between the lesser of two .
